Recipe Background

Wife's Delight is a layered casserole perfect for milestone moments.
It was the blistering summer right after my sister's high school graduation when I first concocted what would become known as 'Wife's Delight' in our family. Freshly armed with that charismatic red diploma, my sister was gearing up for college while I was determined to give her a send-off meal that encapsulated warm family gatherings. We were both knee-deep in the chaos of packing, and anyone who’s moved a teenager to college knows that kitchen simplicity is key during such times. As I rifled through our pantry, I came across a familiar cast of characters: a jar of spaghetti sauce, a trusty envelope of dry mix, and the ever-reliable pound of ground beef that became my saving grace.
With these at my disposal, I set out to create a cozy, layered pasta dish that required minimal fuss but brought maximum comfort. I decided on using medium egg noodles, as they're like hearty little sponges for all that savory sauce goodness. Mixing the spaghetti sauce with a dry mix gave the layers extra thickness, which I found ensures a sliceable finish. A tip for you: when layering, make sure the noodles are cooked al dente. They continue to soften in the oven, absorbing all the flavors. The simplicity of assembling layers of meat, sauce, sour cream, and cheese allowed me to focus less on precision and more on living in the moment with my sister before our family dynamic shifted. Over time, with each bite, it became a dish synonymous with comfort and milestones, a tribute to transitions both big and small.

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Grease a 13x9-inch baking dish.
  • In a skillet, add the ground beef and the garlic salt and cook while crumbling until the meat is no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.

  • Spread 1/3 of the cooked noodles into the bottom of the prepared dish.
  • Spread 1/3 of the meat mixture on top of the noodles.
