The Scoop

The OG Stacked Deck: Grandma’s "Please Fix My Life" 6-Layer Dinner.
Forget complicated multi-step recipes that leave your kitchen looking like a crime scene.
This vintage masterpiece is the culinary equivalent of getting a massive hug from Grandma while she hands you a twenty-dollar bill. It is a vertical tower of pure comfort: seasoned beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and a cozy blanket of veggies simmered together in a single pot until everything melts into delicious harmony. It takes almost zero brainpower to assemble, ignores all modern wellness trends, and cures the soul in exactly one hour.
Assemble, cover, and let Grandma fix your day.
Hack it:
Add more veggies: Layer in carrots, mushrooms, zucchini, corn, or green beans for extra flavor and nutrition.
Make it smoky: Add smoked paprika, a splash of Worcestershire sauce, or a little barbecue seasoning to the beef for deeper flavor.
Upgrade the tomatoes: Swap stewed tomatoes for fire-roasted tomatoes, diced tomatoes with green chilies, or crushed tomatoes for a different texture.
Leftovers:
Make a nice breakfast hash: Chop leftovers and crisp them in a skillet, then top with a fried egg.
Turn it into a soup: Add broth and extra vegetables to transform it into a hearty vegetable beef soup.
Create a loaded baked potato: Spoon the leftovers over baked potatoes and add cheese or sour cream.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 large green pepper, chopped
  • 2 ribs celery, chopped
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can stewed tomatoes
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil

Directions

  • In a Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook, while crumbling, until it is no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain the excess grease.
  • Add an even layer of the onions over the ground beef and sprinkle with 1/3 of the salt and 1/3 of the pepper.
  • Top the onions with an even layer of the potatoes and sprinkle with 1/2 of the remaining salt and 1/2 of the remaining pepper.
  • Top the potatoes with an even layer of the green peppers and sprinkle with the remaining salt and the remaining pepper.
  • Add the celery, the tomatoes and their juices, and the basil on top of the green pepper layer.
  • Bring the beef-and-veggie mixture to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer the beef-and-veggie mixture until the vegetables are tender, about 1 hour.
  • Serve.
