The Scoop

Halloween Mummy Dogs: Crescent rolls make them fun and spooky.
The first time I made Halloween Mummy Dogs, it was my nephew’s sixth birthday. His wild excitement over spooky foods inspired this quirky little dish. Kids love a good theme, and what better way to introduce them to cooking than with silly, edible mummies? I remember lining up cans of refrigerated crescent rolls on the counter, a staple for any last-minute creative snack. With my brother’s playlist of monster tunes filling the kitchen, we started wrapping the hot dogs in dough. I made sure to leave just enough space for those tiny mayonnaise and poppy seed eyes that brought the mummies to life.
As the kitchen filled with the scent of baking rolls, the kids scrambled around like energized jack-o'-lanterns. I showed them how to use a spoon to carefully dot the poppy seeds onto the eyes, a dot of mayo acting as the glue. They giggled at each wobbly attempt, creating a procession of squinting mummies. A key trick here is letting those little mummies cool just a bit before tackling the task of decorating. Otherwise, runny eyes may turn a fun task into a face-melting disaster!
Served with a tray of mustard and ketchup for dipping, these were a hit—easy to hold with small hands and versatile in taste. The dipping sauces let each child create their own flavor adventure. It turned into an effortless way to teach them how cooking can combine creativity with teamwork, and perhaps most importantly, fun. That birthday marked not just an age milestone for my nephew but sparked what I hope will be a lifelong love of food’s enchantment.
