Recipe Background
Iced Hot Chocolate is refreshing yet cozy—perfect for warm summer nights.
On a warm evening, not long after a surprisingly rainy summer, I found myself celebrating my big sister’s return home from a year in Paris. We were gathered around the patio, her stories making us dream of tucked-away cafes and charming corners. I wanted to welcome her back with a little nod to those rooftop nights she adored abroad. Iced hot chocolate seemed just right, with its cozy-meets-refreshing vibe. The trick is freezing that initial blend of milk and hot cocoa mix. Those rich, chocolaty cubes melt slowly, creating a layered experience in every sip. I’ve learned to measure the cocoa with as much care as one would stir a secret into conversation. Pouring cold milk over that cocoa mix takes patience, stirring in a rhythm as unhurried as a jazz tune.
As the evening unfolded, laughter mingled with the clinks of our glasses, and the ice cubes danced along the rim. Each sip was a paradox: cool yet deeply comforting, much like those evenings that fade from laughter into thoughtful murmurs. My sister described it as transporting her right back to a Parisian bistro, where sipping and sharing stories were an art form. I knew then that this playful twist on a childhood staple would forever remind us of those fleeting summer nights. The cocoa’s gentle embrace, combined with chilled decadence, made our impromptu reunion feel like a cherished tradition. Freeze the cubes ahead, and you always have a piece of that moment ready to relive, sip by harmonious sip.
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk divided
- 4 tablespoons hot cocoa mix divided
Directions
- In a bowl, whisk together 1 cup of the milk with 2 tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix.
- Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray and freeze until solid, at least 12 hours.
- Place the remaining hot chocolate mix in a glass.
- Slowly stir the remaining milk into the hot chocolate mix, continuing to stir until all of the hot cocoa mix is dissolved. This may take more time since it is cold. Slowly streaming the milk and mixing as you do so will help.
- When the mixture is smooth, add as many of the chocolate ice cubes as desired.
- Serve.
