Jackie Kennedy's Dinner Pie

The Scoop

While Jackie Kennedy famously brought high-fashion and elite French chefs to the White House, this comforting dinner pie was the ultimate family-approved cheat meal behind closed doors!
It takes a classic shepherd's pie and gives it a total American plot twist by infusing the ground beef with sweet, smoky BBQ sauce and packing the mashed potato topping with two whole blocks of cream cheese.
It is rich, it is deeply satisfying, and it proves that no matter how glamorous you are, a bubbling layer of melted cheddar cheese over mashed potatoes is the ultimate universal love language!
Hack it:
Mix a little smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, or chipotle powder into the barbecue beef for deeper flavor.
Add diced carrots, bell peppers, mushrooms, or peas to the beef layer for extra texture and color.
Try sharp cheddar, smoked gouda, pepper jack, or a blend of cheeses for a more exciting topping.
Turn it into mini pies: Bake individual portions in ramekins or small dishes for a dinner-party-worthy presentation.
Leftovers:
Crisp leftover pie in a skillet and top with a fried egg for a surprisingly amazing breakfast.
Spoon leftovers into halved bell peppers and bake until warm and bubbly.
Add a scoop of the filling to a tortilla with lettuce and extra cheese for a handheld meal.

  • 1 1/2 cups barbeque sauce
  • 2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup butter, cubed
