The Scoop
The Ultimate BLT is a crispy celebration of simplicity and nostalgia.
Sitting at the kitchen counter, I watched my sister slicing tomato after tomato, preparing for our annual game-day bash. This BLT wasn’t just any sandwich; it was a celebration, a comforting tradition that began when neither of us could drive yet somehow managed to host the ultimate sports-watching party. That thin-cut bacon crackles perfectly when cooked right. It has become our lucky charm, with crispy layers that history has shown are best left to cool slightly to maintain their crunch. Those early gatherings in our tiny living room may have been humble, but the preparation was anything but. It was there I learned that ripe avocados are paramount—they’re messy, but the creaminess they add is pure magic.
Game day means the promise of something extraordinary in simplicity. That was the first time we started slathering thick-cut bread with softened butter to ensure an even toast. It took trial and error on our trusty medium skillet to realize how not to over-toast the bread, just kiss it with heat. It's a skill. We’d always use green leaf lettuce instead of iceberg for a delicate texture that didn’t compete with the crispy bacon. The key tip that sealed the deal? Letting tomato slices drain on paper towels. It prevented soggy bread, keeping the magic of each bite intact.
Now, each bite of this iconic sandwich is a taste of those sunlit afternoons, a reminder to savor simple joy. It’s rich, it’s forgiving, but most importantly, it’s deliciously ours.
Ingredients
- 4 slices bacon, thin-cut
- 2 slices hearty white bread, thick-cut
- 4 teaspoons butter, softened
- 1 tomato, ripe
- 1/2 avocado, ripe
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise or other preferred sauce
- 2-4 pieces green leaf lettuce, washed and dried
- salt, to taste
- black pepper, to taste
Directions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the bacon and fry until almost crispy, about 5-7 minutes.
- Transfer the bacon to a paper-towel-lined plate and let it drain and cool slightly.
- Cut each slice of the bacon in half, making 8 strips total. Cover the bacon pieces to keep them warm.
- On a flat surface with a butter knife, spread both sides of each of the white bread slices with the butter.
- In a medium skillet over medium heat, add the buttered bread slices and lightly toast them on both sides, about 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to over-toast them.
- On a clean cutting board, add the tomato and, using a clean, sharp knife, slice it into 3/8-inch-thick slices.
- Transfer the tomato slices to a paper-lined-plate to absorb its moisture.
- On a clean cutting board, add the avocado and, using a clean knife, peel, pit, and slice the avocado into strips.
- On a flat surface and using a clean butter knife, add 1 1/2 tablespoons of the mayonnaise to 1 side of each of the toasted bread slices.
- Add the lettuce, 2 slices of the tomato, the salt, and the pepper to one of the mayonnaise-covered bread slices.
- Add the bacon on top of the tomatoes.
- Add the avocado slices evenly on top of the bacon layer.
- Add the remaining piece of the toasted bread, mayonnaise-side down, on top of the avocado layer and gently press it down.
- Use a sharp serrated knife to cut the BLT in half.
- Serve.
