Recipe Background

Uncle Joe's Whiskey Sours boasts smooth flavor layers and dorm-friendly charm.
A few years ago, I found myself in a cramped dorm room, my first semester at college just behind me. It was a time for new experiences, and I was about to dive into something close to my heart: cocktails, specifically my Uncle Joe’s legendary Whiskey Sours. That weekend, my roommate and I decided to host a small gathering to celebrate surviving finals. Always the adult in my pocket, Uncle Joe had taught me over many summer evenings the art of balancing flavors. He swore by the warmth of whiskey or the smooth kick of bourbon. Mixing lemon juice with a splash of simple syrup was second nature to him, and soon it was to me as well.
Back in the dorm, we faced a challenge: making drinks without a well-equipped bar. We had to improvise, borrowing a cocktail shaker from a friend in the next room. The key to Uncle Joe’s magic was a good shake to emulsify the egg white perfectly, creating silky smooth layers, a trick he had shown me a dozen times. I found that letting it rest a moment after the second shake, as he once mentioned, helped in getting that clean finish. We garnished our creation with a brandied cherry and a douse of Angostura bitters, hinting at more luxurious times than our student budgets allowed. In that tiny slice of time, amidst laughter and shared stories, Uncle Joe’s cocktail was like a link back to home, a splash of comfort in a new world.

  • lemon peel to taste

Directions

  • Add the whiskey, the lemon juice, the simple syrup, and the egg white to a cocktail shaker.
  • Shake the whiskey mixture until it is very emulsified.
  • Add the ice and shake it again until it is very chilled, about 30 seconds.
  • Double strain the mixture over more of the ice into a rocks glass.
  • Add the brandied cherry, 1-2 dashes of the Angostura bitters, and the lemon peel and serve.
