This particular dish was a staple at her Sunday dinners, where ground beef simmered lazily alongside chopped cabbage. Its aroma would wrap around us, making the small kitchen feel warm and welcoming. On that particular moving day, with boxes still scattered around my new apartment, I decided this would be the perfect dish to christen the space. I had just picked up a fresh cabbage from the local market, its crisp leaves reminding me of her garden.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion chopped
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon butter optional
- 1/2 (1 head) cabbage chopped
- 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
- 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Directions
- In a large pan over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the onion and cook until translucent, about 2-3 minutes.
- Drain the fat from the skillet. Alternatively, you can leave the fat and use it in place of the butter.
- Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Add the butter (if you drained the fat from the skillet), the cabbage, the tomatoes, the tomato sauce, the salt, and the pepper to the pan and stir to combine.
- Cover and simmer until the cabbage is soft, about 20-30 minutes.
- Serve.
