Recipe Background

Homemade biscuits loaded with cheese and bacon, great for first-time-in-law visits.
The first time I made these Baked-With-Love Biscuits, it felt like wrapping myself in a comforting quilt of butter and flaky goodness. It was the day my sister and her new spouse came to visit us for the first time, less than a week after they returned from their honeymoon. The kitchen buzzed with the sounds of laughter as we caught up. I turned to this trusty recipe, recalling how I once fumbled through it years ago during a rainy afternoon. This time, though, I was ready to shine. I always have a secret stash of cheddar in the fridge, so I couldn’t resist adding a generous handful, and of course, the smoky richness of bacon to bring it all home.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus more, to taste, for dusting a work surface
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup butter cold and cubed
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese grated
  • 6 slices bacon cooked and crumbled
  • 1/4 cup chives chopped
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Directions

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add 4 cups of the all-purpose flour, the baking powder, the garlic powder, and the salt and whisk until it is combined.
  • Use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour mixture until pea-sized crumbles form.
  • Add the cheese, the bacon, and the chives to the dough mixture and stir until they are evenly distributed.
  • Stir the buttermilk into the dough mixture until the dry ingredients are thoroughly incorporated and a soft dough forms.
  • Use the extra flour to lightly dust a work surface.
  • Turn the dough out onto the prepared surface and knead it, about 3-4 times.
  • Use a rolling pin to roll the dough out into a large rectangle that is approximately 1 1/4-inches-thick.
  • Use a 2-inch round biscuit or cookie cutter to cut the dough into circles.
  • Place the dough circles about 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Place the baking sheet in the freezer and chill the dough circles, about 15 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
  • Transfer the baking sheet from the freezer and bake the biscuits until they are golden-brown, about 15-18 minutes.
  • Serve immediately.
