Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 medium sweet onions sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 12 slices French baguette bread cut 1/2-inch-thick and lightly toasted
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese grated
  • fresh parsley leaves to taste, for garnish

Directions

  • Grease an 11x7-inch baking dish.
  • In a large saucepan over low heat, melt the butter.
  • Add the onions to the melted butter, cover the saucepan, and cook, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes.
  • Add the beef broth and the Worcestershire sauce to the onions and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low and simmer the onion mixture, uncovered, until the liquid has reduced, about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Pour the onion mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  • Place the toasted bread slices on top of the onion mixture in a single layer.
  • Evenly sprinkle the bread slices with the mozzarella and the parmesan.
  • Bake the casserole until the cheese is melted and the top has browned, about 20-30 minutes.
  • Serve the casserole garnished with the parsley.
