The Scoop
It's basically a burger that decided buns were limiting its potential!
The name is doing this recipe absolutely no favors.
Because what’s actually happening here is a cheeseburger, bacon, pickles, and melty cheese getting wrapped in bread and baked until golden and glorious.Â
It's messy, over-the-top, and completely committed to the bit. The kind of recipe that makes people laugh when they hear the name and then immediately ask for a second slice.
Ingredients
For the bread:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup onion, diced
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- flour, to taste, for dusting a work surface
- 1 (11-ounce) tube refrigerated French bread dough
- 1/3 cup ketchup
- 3 tablespoons mustard
- 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 2 dill pickle spears, chopped
- 8 slices American cheese
For the topping:
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- Thousand Island dressing, to taste, for serving
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a large pan, add the ground beef and the diced onion and cook over medium-high heat, while crumbling the meat, until the beef is browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season the beef mixture with the salt and the pepper.
- Drain any excess grease from the pan.
- Using the flour, lightly dust a work surface. Roll the French bread dough out on the work surface into a large rectangle.
- Spread the ketchup and the mustard evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges.
- Evenly layer the cooked beef mixture on top of the condiment layer.
- Sprinkle the crumbled bacon and the chopped pickles over the beef layer.
- Place the American cheese on top of the bacon and the pickles in a single layer.
- Roll up the dough, starting from one long end to the other, and seal the edges.
- Place the rolled-up dough onto the prepared baking sheet, seam-side down.
- Brush the dough with the beaten egg.
- Sprinkle the sesame seeds on top of the egg wash.
- Bake until the dough is golden-brown, about 20-25 minutes.
- Let the bread cool for at least 5 minutes.
- Slice and serve with the Thousand Island dressing.
